Overcome Overwhelm

No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 2 Timothy 2:4

As you read through today's lesson, consider the “civilian pursuits” referenced in 2 Timothy 2:4 to be akin to actions taken in the name of business that primarily feed your ego. These are the types of actions that are useful but not necessary.

Consider the “one who enlists you” to be both our Father in heaven and the stakeholders of your Work (e.g., clients, staff, shareholders, others invested in what you produce).

The Truth About Being a Founder, Owner, or Leader in Business.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of things you think must be done by your deadline. Feeling rushed and pressured is especially easy to do when we are close to the end of a rating period or the end of a year.

Christ-centered, biblically-sound business thinking.

Here's a tactic for keeping your focus on what's important when things seem to get out of hand: Write down everything you want to accomplish within your designated time frame.

Take a look at your list and determine if accomplishing what you have written down is:

  1. Necessary to move your Work forward and please the one who enlisted you – or
  2. Useful to your business if accomplished, but more about your ego and sense of importance than the actual benefit to stakeholders or God's glory.

Once you've gotten your list separated into two buckets, cross-out everything you wrote under Question 2.

Then, take a look at what you have written under Question 1. Focus on what is most important first.

I think it’s so important to evaluate your goals and see if more about your ego and sense of importance! I think we subconsciously put some things down that are more for ego because in our society it’s looked down on to be “unsuccessful” and we get caught up in constantly doing things to make us look like we have it all… but the question is, who does this really benefit in the end? I’m so glad you mentioned this because many need to hear it, especially in today’s times!
