What About Other People?

What about others?

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

A keen focus on looking to the interests of others is central to growing a business that brings glory to Christ and builds wealth.

A Christ-centered company is not intended to be for your benefit or the benefit of your family alone. If you've prayed about your company and have asked God to guide your footsteps in business, your business is the Work to which God has called you.

And, as God's Work, your company was created by God and brought to life by you to be a shining light, instrument of transformation and oasis of opportunity for those God has called to it … including clients, customers, staff, suppliers, members of the public and even competitors.

A Christ-centered business builds wealth (not quick, easy and short-lived riches) in large part because of its focus on the interest of others. A sincere interest in others is demonstrated through (i) only offering to the public what is high in value and (ii) running back-end (and front-end) operations decently and in order.

It is important to note that Philippians 2:4 says you are to look “also to” the interests of others. This phrase is an essential reminder that “looking to the interests of others” does not mean neglecting your interests, excluding your interests, or allowing your business to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous people.

Instead, I believe Philippians 2:4 is reminding us of our Micah 6:9 obligation to be just, fair and merciful in how we treat the people God has designated to be served through any and all contact with our companies and businesses.
